(Bitter Gourd with Lentil)

Serves – 4



Bitter Gourd – 3 nos.

Green Gram Lentil – 3 tblsp.

Oil (for tempering) – 2 tblsp.

Oil – for frying

Salt (for applying on Gourd) – 3 tblsp.

Salt – to taste

Green chillies – 3 nos.

Asafoetida – pinch

Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp.

Coriander powder – ½ tsp.

Red chilli powder – ½ tsp.


1.) Soak the lentil in water for at least 1 hour prior to the cooking.

2.) Cut the bitter gourd in round pieces. Apply salt on the cut pieces (this is done to remove the bitterness). Keep the salt applied for at least ½ hour.

3.) Fry the bitter gourd in oil.

4.) In a toap, heat the oil for tempering. When hot, add chopped green chillies and asafoetida. As soon as the green chillies start popping, add the green gram lentil with the water in which it was soaked and salt. Cook till the lentil is tender.

5.) When done, add the remaining spices and bitter gourd. Mix well and cook for a couple of minute. Serve hot.

Dar Karelo is served with Phulko .
