(Roasted Gram Flour Fudge)


Gram Flour – 200 gms.
Ghee – 50 gms.
Ghee – ½ tsp. (for greasing Thali)
Sugar – 150 gms.
Water – 150 ml.
Poppy seeds – 5 gms.
Milk – 1 cup


  1. In a kadai, heat ghee on a medium flame. When it melts, add gram flour.
  2. On a medium flame, roast the gram flour till it is chocolate brown in colour. Add milk and stir continuously.
  3. In a separate vessel, make a sugar syrup of 3 string consistency – (Heat water. Add sugar to it. Keep stirring till the sugar melts and the consistency becomes that of 3 strings, i.e, very thick.)
  4. Add the sugar syrup to the gram flour mixture. Mix thoroughly. Keep cooking this mixture till the entire sugar syrup is blended in the mixture and it becomes thick.
  5. Place the mixture in a greased thali.
  6. Sprinkle with poppy seeds while the Mohanthal is still hot. Allow it to cool & set.
  7. Cut into small pieces.

To serve

Mohanthal is a very versatile sweet. It is also considered one of Lord Krishna’s favourite sweets – hence the name – Mohan (Lord Krishna’s acronym) – Thal (is a thali or plate)
Mohanthal can be served along with any of the meals as a dessert or can be served for tea with Motichanna or Besan.
