(Fried Poppadum Yoghurt)



Varas* – 2 nos.
Oil – for frying
Curds – 2 cups
Red Chilli Powder – ½ tsp.
Turmeric – ¼ tsp.
Mustard seeds – ½ tsp.
Salt – ¼ tsp.
Sugar (optional) – ¼ tsp.


  1. In a kadai, heat the oil for frying on a medium flame. When hot, fry the Varas till they are crisp and dark brown in colour. Remove on an absorbent paper and drain off the excess oil. Keep aside.
  2. Whip the yoghurt finely and add all the spices. Grind the mustard seeds before adding them. Mix thoroughly.
  3. Break the fried Varas into small pieces and add them to the whipped yoghurt. Mix well and serve chilled.

To serve

Khatto Saag is made during Panuma (pregnancy ceremony).
It can also be served as an accompaniment to any of the meals.
